We are creating the platform we didn’t have.
In a world where mental health is gaining more exposure in news media, the movie screen and our beloved television shows, there’s one field where mental health has yet to be fully exposed. Quite often, this is a literal field: the baseball field, the football field, soccer field and anywhere else that athletes, fans and professionals join together to celebrate sport.
At the center of sport, we find our favorite athletes. So often, we equate these athletes as a symbol of physical strength, to the point that we forget their state of mind. A handful of athletes started to change that school of thought, such as Kevin Love and Michael Phelps. They have cracked open the Pandora’s box. To this day, similar stories echo across the industry as the start of a conversation regarding sports and mental health.
Halfway through our second semester at Columbia’s Sports Management graduate program, we realized that the intersection between sports and mental health goes beyond what our professional athletes experience. The conversation can also extend to overworked athletes, those who use sport as an escape or industry professionals who deal with everyday stress and fatigue that come with the work territory.
We would like to thank a mentor who taught us to find strength in our personal mental struggles, rather than view them as weaknesses. We can only hope that this concern for others and open mindedness regarding mental illness will eventually blanket the sports industry, so that those affected can find comfort. We hope that this new platform will inspire people to share this understanding on and off the field.
Our mission is…
To strike out the stigma of mental health as it pertains to all aspects of sport…
To eradicate the feeling of loneliness in a crowded stadium…
To champion each other through difficult times…
To approach everyday challenges with a winning attitude…
To lift the weight off of shoulders with power and perseverance…
And to develop the playbook on the mental game.
With support,
Andrea and Larissa
